BEFORE 1850: ANCIENT TO INDUSTRIAL ERA
The extended coastal region of what would be called 'Madras' in the 17th century has witnessed various artistic contributions since ancient times. From the time of early Roman traders in the 1st century CE, through Satavahana, Pallava, Chola and Vijayanagar Empires as well as smaller Nayak Kingdoms in the 17th century, this region has seen significant artistic engagement. This talk will illustrate over 1800 years of art from this geographical region prior to the arrival of Europeans.
This talk is the first part of the three-part lecture series on ‘HISTORY OF ART IN MADRAS’ by Ashvin E. Rajagopalan (Founder, Ashvita’s)
