description
Shree Lakshmi Vasudeo H. Pandya 1928 Published by Shree Vasudeo Picture Co. Jariwalla’s Chawl, Arthur Road, Tardeo Bombay Registration no. 5015 Printed in Germany Shree Lakshmi painted by Vasudeo Pandya in 1928 is based on the original Ravi Varma oleograph ‘Standing Lakshmi’ printed by the Ravi Varma Press in c.1890. In this more modern rendition published by Shree Vasudeo Picture Co., Bombay, Lakshmi stands in the middle of a stream with mountains in the background and vegetation flanking her on all sides. She adorns a pink saree with a yellow blouse and is moderately bejewelled. Traditionally Gajalakshmi is flanked with elephants on both side, but here we see a baby elephant smiling, holding a garland and is wearing a golden-green headgear and garment. This prints especially mentions being printed in Germany that gave an impression of quality and superior technology. Almost all presses in India were sourced from Germany and while lithography presses existed in India at the time, many printers sent their work to Germany to be made into lithographs.
