description
Sculptor and painter, T.R.P.Mookiah (1934 – 2009) grew up in a village in the Srivilliputhur district of Tamil Nadu. In the1960s, when the artists of Madras embarked on their quest to arrive at a modernity that would be cognisant of the regional, some of them such as Mookiah and his cousin P.Perumal, responded by revisiting their roots. Mookiah began to use his culturally rich childhood experiences as a starting point to arrive at his own creative expression. While being anchored in the local, his work with its distorted forms and expressive colours, also reflected an intuitive awareness of the primitivist inclinations within modern art.

Seen here are works depicting subjects the artist often revisited- bull fights, rural sports and farming activities. Through these works, the artist created a vision of man as a social being, existing in harmony with fellow people and animals. At the same time, these works also epitomised the larger instinct within the art movement in Madras to create works that would be contemporary due to the manner in which it recontextualised the native.
