description
Born in Elayirampannai in Virudhunagar district in 1937, Murugakani migrated to Sivakasi after finishing school in 1955 to pursue his career as a full time illustrator at Sivakasi.

Sivakasi, a small city in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu was renowed for the production of fireworks. By the late 1970s there were 350 photo- offset machines and approximately one thousand litho and letterpress units operating in the town. The printing industry originally developed as an adjunct to firework production, producing colourful labels and major Sivakasi printers such as Coronation Litho were significant forces by the early 1960s. A detailed history of south Indian print-culture and Sivakasi printing remains to be written but there is some evidence of very early print production. It has been suggested that the generation of south Indian artists associated with Kondiah Raju (1898–1976) entered lithographic picture production after early careers producing painted scenery for Tamil theatre groups.
