description

Lakshmi Painted by Raja Ravi Varma From the Ravi Varma Udaya Vijaya Photo Litho Offset Works, Ghatkopar Printed by S.S. Brijbasi & Sons.

c. 1930

This is a gold embossed rendition of Lakshmi as authored by Ravi Varma that was later printed by other printing presses across the country. Lakshmi stands in the middle of a stream encapsulated by fauna and in front of mountains. She adorns a pink saree with a yellow blouse and is moderately bejewelled. Traditionally Gajalakshmi is flanked with elephants on both sides, but here we see a baby elephant smiling, holding a garland. From the 1930s through the 1950s, the most successful and influential publisher of god-prints was S.S. Brijbasi and Sons, founded by two brothers, Shrinathdasji and Shyamsunderlal Brijbasi. The brothers, who owned a picture-framing shop in Karachi made their foray into publishing when they began producing prints of the Hindu deities based on oil paintings done by artists from Nathdwara. They moved to Mathura in 1939. (artandculture.google.com)
