description

Sheshnarayan with Consorts<r> Ravi Varma Press<r> c. 1930s

<r> This gold embossed popular imagery portrays Vishnu as Sheshnarayan seated under the Sheshnag. Sitting under a five-headed cobra, Sheshnarayan emulates the primal being where the Sheshnag or Adishesh controls time and creation by coiling and uncoiling his body. This visual imagery was prefered by Raja Ravi Varma for his prints and that lead to multiple copies being made of the same imagery across the 1930s.
