Lot 3
The Babcock & Wilcox Company, 1971
Estimate : 3,500 - 4,500
This beautiful certificate from the Babcock & Wilcox Limited was issued in 1971. This historic document was has a pink ornate border around it. This document, which contains the printed signatures of the Company President and Treasurer, was printed by the American Bank Note Company. The vignette features two males flanking the Babcock & Wilcox company logo. They are surrounded by a variety of items including an anvil, laboratory equipment and a chain.
Stephen Wilcox of Rhode Island, USA, patented a water tube boiler in 1856. This boiler increased heating surfaces, allowed better water circulation and was inherently safe. Eleven years later, he and George Babcock established a partnership: Babcock, Wilcox and Company. This company was established to manufacture and market these water tube steam boilers. This was the stepping stone for the modern era of large high-pressure and high-temperature steam power plants.
In 1881, the Babcock & Wilcox partnership was incorporated as The Babcock & Wilcox Company. The same year saw the Brush Electric Light Company using the Babcock & Wilcox boilers to power the first electric generating station in the United States.
In 1902, New York City installed its first subway and also powered it with B&W boilers. In 1903, B&W equipped the Fisk Street Station of the Commonwealth Edison Company of Chicago with 24 boilers. This was the first utility station to use steam turbines exclusively for electric power generation. This was just the beginning; due to increased demand through the 1920s, B & W developed larger boilers, leading to the use of water cooled furnaces and coal as a fuel.
B&W has also been involved in the field of nuclear power for over 40 years, providing nuclear heat exchangers, nuclear plant services and more than 200 nuclear steam generators to customers around the world. Unfortunately, this is not a fond association: on March 29, 1979 at 4pm, B&W's Three Mile Island 2 Reactor (TMI-2) accident occured.
Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises Inc. as it is now known, is headquartered in Barberton, Ohio.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
