Lot 8
From Merchants to Emperors: British Artists and India, 1757 - 1930
Estimate : 8,000 - 10,000
Place: London
Binding: Soft Bound
No. of pages (illustrations+plates): 231 + 220 duotone reproductions and 12 colour plates
By the end of the 18th century, most of the leading professional British artists had visited and painted India: Tilly Kettle, William Hodges, Johann Zoffany, Thomas and William Daniell, Arthur William Devis, Francesco Renaldi, James Wales, and George Chinnery. Draftsmen, surveyors, engineers, and amateur artists such as Sir Charles D'Oyly, James Forbes, Robert Grindlay, and Emily Eden also made the journey and recorded their perceptions of life in India with perhaps more charm and sincerity than their professional
counterparts. From Merchants to Emperors vividly captures this unique era with 220 duotone reproductions and 12 colour plates drawn largely from a private art collection never before seen in public.
Pratapaditya Pal was a Senior Curator of Indian and Southeast Asian Art and Curator-in-Charge of West Asian Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Adjunct Professor of Fine Arts at the University of Southern California.
Vidya Dehejia was an Adjunct Associate Professor of Art History at Columbia University in New York City.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
