This lot presents a predominant theme, an image really, from Souza’s repertoire of images that he usually titled “Heads.” Such works routinely portrayed the head of a male figure, often in close-up, against a plain background yet displayed a sense of difference in terms of the specificity of the subject being represented. Works such as Head of a Portuguese Navigator (1961), Jesting Pilate (1956) (in reference to the character of Pontius Pilate from Christianity), St. Sebastian (1954), Man with a Dribbling Nose (1957), Head of a King (1961), Primitive Head (1956), Disintegrated Head (1956), Gothic Head (1957) and Prophet (1958) among countless others indicate the range of Souza’s subject matter (through their titles) as well as his artistic concerns that he brought out through these psychological portraits in various media, using varying techniques. Although it isn't clear when Souza began portraying such “heads” with features such as the eyes and the nose being represented in an exaggerated, expressionistic manner like in this painting, the theme is more commonly prevalent in his works from the 1950s and 60s. This piece in particular differs from his earlier works in its depth of expression, or rather the lack of it.
