Flower Bazaar, c.1890's, Madras
Estimate : 15,000 - 20,000
Original Photographs from the Wiele & Klein Photography Studio, Madras.

That were printed on archival Ilford photo paper in 2002 from the original glass plate negatives of the Harry Miller Collection.

Sometime in the 1980’s, Harry Miller, who was a photographer with the Indian Express in Madras, was informed of a lady in Coonoor, Miss Cooper, who had a collection of glass plate negatives. With the help of the Inspector General of Police, he brought these negatives to Madras and over time unravelled around 1500 glass negatives that had documented the various important landmarks in the Madras Presidency as well as few other cities of South India. These glass plate negatives date back to as early ast the 1890’s and go untiltill about the 1940’s.

Based on a very thin piece of information, that Miss Cooper had worked as a nanny for a German family in the 1940’s, it was assumed that sheit could have workedbeen for one of the two owners of athe photographic studio, which by that time washad been known as Klein & Peyerl. With this connection being made it would have then been probable that the early negatives were from the times of the first company owned by Wiele & Klein. The studio, located on Mount Road, was extremely popular not just for portraits but for also these scenes of Madras thatfor people couldto purchase.

After Harry Miller’s death in 1998, these negatives were purchased by a group of photographers called Vintage Vignettes. In 2002, these photographs in the following lots were selected to be developed from the original glass plate negatives and are original photographs.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
