Lot essay

An Indian artist of international repute, Subodh Gupta is known for his use of everyday objects, especially kitchen utensils, to convey the interaction between the local and the global in India. In this work, he uses ceramic plates skilfully painted with leftover food and a spoon seemingly put down just a moment ago as the meal was completed. Through this, the viewer is invited to imagine a tempting sweet or sumptuous dessert relished by an unknown eater. In the Indian context, where hunger is a constant in many people’s lives, both the food (dessert) and the way in which it is served (on a luxurious porcelain plate) create a paradoxical aesthetic and emotional experience of envy and enjoyment.
