Lot essay

Bombay based artist Badri Narayan (1929-2013) enjoyed working with ceramic tiles since it not only gave him the opportunity to engage with a different medium, but also helped add an artistic dimension to everyday architecture. In the 1960s, Badri Narayan worked with Hexamar Studio (formerly Vitrum Studio) founded by Simon Lifschutz, a Jew of Polish origin, and a refugee in India during the Second World War. At Hexamar, Narayan created paintings with ceramic glaze applied on tiles. The finished pieces would then be sold through the studio and by the artists themselves to the collectors. This piece is particularly notable for its beauty of colour and form.
