Lot essay

Born in 1905, Walter Langhammer was an Austrian immigree who escaped to India during the Second World War. Setting up base in Bombay, Langhammer became an integral part of the Indian modern art movement, mentoring artists from the Bombay Progressives like Raza, Husain, Ara and Souza. Langhammer provided an experience and exposure that many of the artists then did not have access to. ‘Together with Rudolf von Leyden and Emmanuel Schlesinger, he introduced a generation of Indian artists to Expressionist works like those of his teacher Oskar Kokoschka. The Expressionist aesthetic and bright, saturated color palette were fundamentally different from that of the Royal Academy of Art, which previously controlled art education in Indian schools. Just as Langhammer influenced his young protégés, they, and the experience of India, shaped his own work. The colors and light he encountered in India became Langhammer’s obsession.’

The colours of the artwork are much brighter and the canvas is less creamier than shown in the catalogue illustration. Overall excellent condition.
