Lot essay

Raza’s world was encompassed in a Bindu. For Raza, infinity could be found in the simplest of objects and ideas. His works could be considered an embodiment of personal spirituality, drawing our eye to the centre of the world, this is indeed where the genesis of creation is born, first light, then shapes and colors, but also vibrations, energy, sound and space. Born in Madhya Pradesh in 1922, SH Raza attended the Nagpur School of Art, Nagpur, (1939–43) then went on to pursue a degree at the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai. He spent much of his time in the 1950s at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His love for Paris and modernism blossomed and remained a life-long affair, while still maintaining a strong bond with India.

Raza collaborated with La Tuilerie to create eight ceramics works painted with polychrome enamel that were published in a book by Alan Bonfand in 2008. These works were made in a limited edition of eight and are one of the rarest in the world.
