Lot essay

Heralded as the ‘Father of Modern Indian Sculpture’, Ramkinkar Baij worked with an intuitive flow, highlighting the life of the migrants and the Santhal community near Santiniketan. Student of Nandalal Bose, his works brought to light the diversity of his medium, breaking away from rigid systems of academic training resulting in unique and individualistic works. It was at Shantiniketan that he was first exposed to the contemporary European art world. But despite this exposure to the west, Shantiniketan never imposed colonial ideals of art on its students, rather it stressed on remaining rooted to one’s culture. Over the decades, Baij experimented Impressionism and Cubism, creating works inspired from the abundant nature and local village communities around him. The same themes that so frequently occur in his sculptures are immortalised in paintings too. Baij’s early years at Shantiniketan were experimental. He tried various mediums: watercolour and oil paints and these too in various styles. Like other students at Shantiniketan he too tried the wash and gouache technique of the East, painting in the soft and slender style of the Bengal school.

In 1970, Government of India commissioned him to create two colossal works for the Reserve Bank of India, the Yaksha-Yakshini stand at the entrance of their New Delhi headquarters for which he was awarded with the Padma Bhushan.

Baij died on August 2, 1980 in Kolkata.
