Lot essay

Lalu Prasad Shaw (b.1937) belonged to the generation of Indian artists who emerged in the sixties in the post-war socio-cultural and political background and which had firm moorings in the native soil. And like all the other young artists, he too was keen on hitting upon a painting style of his own, something which for him was not easy to accomplish and demanded a long and dedicated engagement. He started his career with oil painting and mainly concentrated on still life along with experimentation with some organic forms.

(excerpt from The Myriad Minded Artist - Lalu Prasad Shaw Paintings and Drawings written and published by Gallery Sanskriti, 2007)

Part of his recurring series, Bibi VII exemplifies the artist's core practice, reflecting Bengali society and mastery over line and colour. Shaw's works reflect everyday life, fusing together Kalighat pat and studio photography, he showcases different profiles of his subjects encapsulating them in frames using colour as a medium of emotional expression. His works formulate our modern understanding of tradition and society.
