description
Kothanda Ram G. Venkatesh Rao 1927 Bangalore The Ravi Varma FAL Works Registered no. 2 Sole Agents: E G Krishniah Setty & Sons. This is a chromolithograph of Kothanda Ram. The central figure is of Ram flanked by Laxman and Sita on either side and Hanuman kneeling at his feet. The artist has painted an interior scene with ornate columns in the background and carpet under their feet. The scene is like a studio setting with choreographed stances and attire. Here we understand the order of importance with scale and posture as Ram stands tall and muscular in the centre with his ‘kothanda’, the celestial bow of Vishnu. Laxman who displays the same muscular body stands on the left and Sita on the right. Hanuman has been remarkably reduced in scale and is kneeling down next to Ram. Mistakenly attributed Ravi Varma, this print was painted by G. Venkatesh Rao for Ravi Varma FAL Works in 1927 and distributed in Bangalore by the Krishniah Setty and Sons.
