description
The human form was at the centre of K.Sreenivasulu’s (1923- 1995) work. Particularly, he was fascinated by the robust people of the earth- farmers, fisherfolk and villagers- whom he had encountered in his childhood years in Andhra and subsequently, in the seaside locality of Adyar where Kalakshetra, the art institute where he taught, was located. He captured these characters using an artistic language composed of flat and vivid colours, decorative flourishes, and simplified forms, that was evocative of indigenous forms of expression. This artistic vocabulary could be attributed to his training at the art college in Madras, experience in copying South Indian murals love for indigenous craft traditions, exposure to the works of Jamini Roy and teaching experience at Kalakshetra. Responding to Indian traditions with the critical awareness of a modern artist, he skilfully negotiated individual creativity with the legacy of a collective practice. Through this process he not only enriched his works but also infused the contemporary with a historical spirit
