Badri Narayan (1929 - 2013)
Estimate : 1,75,000 - 2,25,000
Born in 1929 in Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh, Badri Narayan was a self taught artist and began his career in ceramics before moving to ink, pastels and watercolour. Over the span of 45 years, he engaged with art as an artist, teacher and author. In the 1960s, Badri Narayan worked with Hexamar Studio (formerly Vitrum Studio) founded by Simon Lifschutz, a Jew of Polish origin, and a refugee in India during the Second World War. At Hexamar, Narayan created paintings with ceramic glaze applied on tiles. He believed in the two dimensions of works, where each line was contemplative and calculated. Badri Narayan’s works offered a deep dive into human consciousness without any dramatic interjections and declarations. The artists found inspiration in Byzantine portraiture, Ajanta Murals and Pahari miniatures. This resulted in intricate and simple works that offered a very genuine and deep portrayal of Indian mythology and the daily life around him.

In addition to working with diverse mediums and platforms, Badri Narayan also wrote short stories and illustrated children’s books. In many ways these ceramic plates take us back to his original medium of choice, and combine that with his love for narration and illustration. These cats are drawn with a childlike delight, giving the perception of having been sketched on by a child itself, with their flat eyes and body, filling them with multi coloured geometric patterns from head to tail.

Narayan has had over fifty national and international shows and his works are in several permanent collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art and National Museum in New Delhi. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1987 and the Maharashtra Gaurav Puruskar in 1990.

Badri Narayan passed away in 2013 in Bangalore.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
