R. Krishna Rao (1915 - 2006)
Estimate : 5,00,000 - 8,00,000
An abstract work of art in hues of ochre, yellow, beige, dark blue, light blue, green and brown created by using the finger impression technique and applying thick brushstrokes. Huts(?) with dark blue thatched roofs are visible at the top. Human figures around a bridge are visible in the middle.

Born in the town of Madurai in 1915, R. Krishna Rao joined the Government School of Arts & Crafts in 1942. He completed the five year course in just three years and went on to work as a textile designer at a private firm and then joined the War Publicity Department as an artist. In 1948 he camecomes back to his college in the role of Head of the Department of Applied Arts and was then transferred as Vice-Principal to the Government School of Arts and Crafts in Kumbakonam. In 1968, when K.C.S. Paniker left his position as the Principal at the college in Madras, Krishna Rao was appointed as the first Principal in the new four-year system. In 1972, Krishna Rao joined Kalakshetra as Director of the Department of Art.

Being one of the earliest students to be educated and trained under D. P. Roy Chowdhury, Krishna Rao developed a skill for landscapes particularly with watercolours. His early works are heavily influenced by the early Bengal School masters like Gaganendranath Tagore and Nandalal Bose as the knowledge flow from E B Havell and his students was frequently encouraged among the students in Madras then.

This painting is a rare example of an oil painting by Krishna Rao that depicts athe scene withof some huts that were behind the college campus at the time. His use of a particular set of colours is very indicative of the palette being used at the college in the 1960’s. This almost post-impressionistic painting is a classic example of the high period of the Madras School.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
