Lot essay

This book, first published in 1933, was the first text on the general Hindu attitude to art. It sums up under the wider title of the Hindu view of art all such considerations – religious, philosophic, sociological, aesthetic and technical – as might be helpful for the understanding of Indian art.

Mulk Raj Anand dedicated this work to E. B. Havell and Anand Coomaraswamy. Anand was a prolific writer, art critic and patron of the arts. His work besides art highlighted the class and caste disparity within India. He was the founder of Marg Magazine (1946), one of India’s oldest publications dedicated to the visual and performing arts and perhaps less known for his initiative to establish India’s First Triennale of Contemporary World Art in 1968, the country’s first contribution to a now-common global art-exhibition format.
